part 1: the natural deodorant switch - your body's adjustment period

In recent years, we see more people making the health concious decision to switch to natural deodorants over conventional ones.

Natural deodorants, containing pure ingredients, work harmoniously with the body's process, without the nasty side effects of harmful ingredients.

For some people making the switch may prompt a transitional phase, as your body adjusts to a new form of personal care.

The Transition to Natural Deodorants

Conventional deodorants often contain synthetic ingredients like aluminum compounds, parabens, and artificial fragrances. While these ingredients effectively combat sweat and odour, concerns about their potential health risks have led people to question their deodorant choices.

Natural deodorants, on the other hand, typically include ingredients such as essential oils, baking soda, and mineral salts to neutralise odour without blocking sweat glands.

What to expect during the adjustment phase:

1. Increased Sweat:

Natural deodorants do not contain antiperspirants that block sweat glands. Initially, you might notice an increase in perspiration as your body regulates and detoxifies, this is a normal part of the transition phase.

2. Potential Odour:

As your body adjusts, you might experience a temporary increase in odour. This adjustment period occurs as the natural deodorant works to balance your skin's microbiome and eliminate toxins.

3. Skin Sensitivity:

Some natural deodorants contain baking soda, which can cause irritation for some individuals with sensitive skin. Redness, itching, or rashes might occur temporarily.

All of the above typically last for a short period of time and subside once your skin has adjusted.

For new users we generally advise slowly easing into a natural deodorant, to give your body a chance to adjust to the ingredients.

In part II of this mini blog series, we will provide tips for a smoother transition to natural deodorant, and a how-to-guide for using handmaid's 100% natural deodorant products.
